Hunter Pro-C Base Outdoor 3 Zone Versatile and Well Built Timer
By P. Schmidt [December 11, 2011, 3:56 am]I have been using the Hunter Pro-C irrigation/sprinker timer for a few year now. I previously used a manifold made from PVC pipe, feeding multiple Nelsom programmable timers, and while that worked well I found that at least one Nelson timer each year would fail. I decided to switch to a single timer controller, and replace the individual timers on the manifold with Rainbird valves.
The Pro-C sits outdoors May through September, where I have it bolted to a fence post. I need to mention that, while the Pro-C is designed to be out in the 'elements', I have added more protection in the form of a large metal bucket that I put upside-down over the timer on top of its post, keeping rain and direct sunlight off of it. Easy to list the bucket off when I need to check or change the timer settings.
The Pro-C seems to have a model that runs on a 24 volt power, but I have the version that plugs into 120VAC power.
The Pro-C comes with three 'outputs' to control up to three valves, plus an 'input' where you can wire up a rain gauge. There is also a special output for controlling a well pump, if you happen to use one for your irrigation system.
The Pro-C has a single large Function knob, where you select what you want to be changing or setting; start times, watering durations, days to water, etc. The know also allows setting manual watering. There is also a set of pushbuttons: Left & Right menu navigation, + & - for changing numerical values, and a PRG button for deciding which of three programs you want to work on. For most settings, the procedure is simple: turn the knob to the type of parameter you wish to set, press the PRG button to select which program you want to be working with, use the Left & Right buttons to select the parameter, then use the + & - buttons to change the parameter. Repeat for all other settings.
The Pro-C has an LCD display. I don't think there is any kind of backlighting on it, so you need decent light to see it. Most daylight illumination is sufficient; I have had no problem reading the display in dawn and twilight. It mostly displays the program number and a set of numerical digits for the parameter value in question. Extra indicators appear when you are in the mode to select parts of a program cycle (each program can have up to four parts), or when you are setting which days to water (where days of the week appear on the display).
The Pro-C has a water-tight battery compartment, but the battery is actually not really needed for most situations. The Pro-C's program & settings memory is non-volatile, so it remembers your settings even with the power off. The battery is used only to supply power to the Pro-C so you can program it while it is not plugged in to AC power. If you always will have the Pro-C plugged in, then there is no need for the battery.
I have found the Pro-C to be very well built, well thought-out. I have worn out the valves but the timer keeps working just fine. My only reservation is that I find some of the terminology used by Hunter for the various settings is less then intuitive, so I need to check the manual every year to remember which function is called by what name.
