ASUS U36SD-XH71 Great laptop for the price
By D. Lao "Domin8r" [January 18, 2012, 2:21 am]I just recently bought this laptop for my dad, and I'm glad to say we're both pleased with the purchase. I've had some time over the holiday to mess with the asus so what follows will be what, IMHO are the pros and cons of this series.
Pros:
Light but sturdy (very little flex)
Very fast boot and shutdown times (consistently below 20 sec and 8 seconds respectively)
Fast performance overall
Excellent heat management
GT 520M is a nice addition though still an entry level gpu
Excellent battery life
Great keyboard and touchpad
Cons:
Terrible speakers, but honestly I haven't come across a 13 incher with "good" speakers
Screen quality leaves a lot to be desired (does not lack in brightness, but contrast is poor and colors are a bit washed out)
This laptop is great for the price. The core i7 processor and SSD do not disappoint. I'm not a believer in Windows experience index but I think it will help those who are comparing laptops: Intel SSD - 7.7, i7 2620m - 7.1, RAM - 7.5, Gaming graphics - 6.4
Some other small gripes I have (based solely on personal preference) is that the keyboard surface is a slightly different shade compared to the rest of the laptop. It's only noticeable in sunlight or brightly lit rooms, but the keyboard surface has a faint bluish hue. The flat black and textured feel of the laptop is great and definitely helps repel fingerprints, however the screen and bezel are both glossy. Again this is just preference, but I would have liked it better if the entire laptop were the same texture and color.
Finally, something that I know everyone will like to know is that the laptop comes with an 8-cell battery which definitely helps with battery life but adds both weight and volume. With this battery, the laptop will not be completely flat on the bottom and will be raised and heavier near the back. This laptop weighs 3.66 lbs with the 8 cell battery.
